Many of the shop owners are generations in the making. I should also note that we live in a geographic location that calls to the outdoorsy type. Thus, rendering the concept of a "virtual" connection on deaf ears.

In the meantime, those who travel from far & BrightKite.

Each offers their reasons for utilizing their app, but for the purpose of examples I'm going to continue to refer to FourSquare.

I like them the best, they seem the easiest to use for the "middle" generation {those of us old enough to remember computer usage BEFORE the internet}.

The most important message I can give any Brick & Mortar right now is to pay attention to GeoTagging, it's the megaphone to "word of mouth" advertising.
<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); Threadsy is much easier to acquire than Google Wave.

However, once I began the set up of my profile with my different accounts in Threadsy I had issues with a few of my email addresses {all on the GoDaddy server}. The Twitter & Facebook accounts came through okay as well as my Gmail account.

And yet, frustration.

I know that I rely on the tools technology offers, like labeling my emails & archiving them appropriately so that when I'm in a tele-meeting I can pull up all correspondence regarding the topic being discussed. Threadsy didn't appear to pull over all my "labels" from Gmail. Aaaarrgggg!

I digress.

I will sing praises to their efforts though. The right third of the screen is dedicated to your Twitter stream {with your responses "threaded" in} & the remainder of the screen is dedicated to direct communications ~ email, FaceBook messages, DM's from Twitter ~ all "threaded" in via real time. So, if my GoDaddy issues were fixed, who knows this could be what I've been looking for? I still don't know ~ since I can't bring it all over to completely try it out. And subsequently have abandoned the idea until then.

Now onto Google Wave.

I've got nothing for ya.

It appears there aren't any invitations available at the moment. {Even for me, the 2.0 Mental Clutter Expert}

It sounds promising though. And since I'm a huge fan of how Google goes about encouraging their employees to be creative {everyone is allowed to be who they are ~ no judgments}, I'll patiently wait for the public release of the Wave.

A side note here, I have been using the Google Chrome internet platform the last few days. After installing it, you have the option of adding extensions ~ just like any other browser, but here my "chromed bird" shows a number & I can essentially click on it as a "drop down menu" style to see recent Twitter conversations & interact. I've also added my Gmail checker which again allows that drop down menu style to see just the unread emails ~ downfall, no labels {again}.

It seems, as this VERY young industry of social media takes hold, developers will figure out the solutions to the needs/tools we all will begin begging for. In the meantime, keeping track of where you are is going to be much more cumbersome.

I'm curious what Mac users have available to them. So, in our super-hero ego we think "I can do that". Truth be told ... can you really?

Sure there are things I can multi-task like talking to the kids while doing dishes on one foot while I ward the dog off from the dishwasher with the other foot. But honestly, is that how I would choose to do it? Probably not.

My recommendation would be to evaluate what you could "partner" with your Twitter habit that allows you to participate while doing something else {not so mentally taxing}.

For example:

having your morning cup of coffee {or evening glass of wine}

taking your daily walk

eating lunch

waiting {for kids after school or at the Dr.'s office}

Then, separately set aside some time during your day/week that is "Twitter Social Hour" time where you completely focus on conversations.

Notice this strategy puts you back in the driver's seat? But it will also require self discipline.

During the non-Twitter hours {this is going to be the hard part} turn off your automatic notifications.

Don't worry the screeching tires & car crashing noises you just heard were in your head ~ no one is really hurt.

But isn't that kind of the point of us staying plugged in? We don't want to miss anything OR accidentally hurt someone's feelings because we didn't respond to them {right away}?

So here's the concept ~ let your tweeps know that you're going offline for awhile AND when you expect you'll be back online. {kind of like how those "will return at:" clock hangers are on storefront doors}

While offline, or otherwise lovingly referred to as "going dark", plug into what you're doing. If you're hanging out with your kiddos ~ look into their eyes while they're talking to you, if you're working on a research project ~ focus on your intentions & stay in sites that help you complete what you're doing.

I would love to hear some feedback here! What strategies are you already using? What tools help you the most? How do you feel about "going dark"?

Looking forward to the conversation!

april

ShareThis

Mental Clutter & Social Media...

http://www.simplyorganizedonline.com/4/post/2010/03/first-post.html

http://www.simplyorganizedonline.com/4/post/2010/03/first-post.html#comments

Uncategorized

Welcome to my latest brainstorming idea!Recently, I spoke at the Mom 2.0 Summit in Houston Texas about Mental Clutter & your 2.0 Lifestyle. {what a blast & inspiration!}So, after returning home I felt the need to create this blog & continue the conversation from the conference.My intention with [...]

Welcome to my latest brainstorming idea!

Recently, I spoke at the Mom 2.0 Summit in Houston Texas about Mental Clutter & your 2.0 Lifestyle. {what a blast & inspiration!}

So, after returning home I felt the need to create this blog & continue the conversation from the conference.

My intention with this "new addition" to the Simply Organized Online Family is to bring several of the tips, resources, tools & recommendations to anyone looking for help in navigating the overwhelming feeling while online.

The reason I named the blog "2.0 Lifestyle" is because I'm seeing the shift happen among all my clients, whether it's the Busy Mom, Stay-at-Home Dad, Unemployed Student or Hobby 2.0 Surfer ~ they all are trying to figure out how to incorporate the technology into their daily life. Some successfully, most {tragically} with too much guilt.

So, I've created a place where those who Tweet, FaceBook, Blog or even LinkedIn can come to find funny stories as well as organizing resources that could help them out.

**Disclaimer**
This is the one place you will see advertising on the sidebar {other blogs on here sport the things I like to advocate} however, rest assured, I still hold my integrity up as a shield to protect any reader. What that means is ... ALL advertisers need to have a Moral Alignment to what this blog is all about ~ eliminating the overwhelm in your 2.0 Lifestyle. {So, sorry Pepsi ~ no matter how big the bucks are, you can't advertise here}

I hope you enjoy the upcoming conversations & I really hope you'll comment when you find something useful {or that I've left out that helped you}.

Looking forward to meeting y'all!

april

ShareThis
