Organizing it all... 03/13/2010
So here you are, full swing into social media ... You know you're on FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Ning networks {you may not even realize that one}, Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, FriendFeed, Yahoo! Groups, Google Groups, ShareThis, FeedBurner ... the list goes on & on & on & on. Phew! Now what? Either you read that paragraph & resonated with all the names {& possibly thought of more that weren't listed} or you read it & had an eye opening experience ~ "I have set up profiles on most of those sites!" The logical thinker in me automatically asks the question: "Has someone created a site where I can access all these profiles at once?" You know, a one stop shop? I want to be able to create a dashboard that shows me an overview of my "online life". And then, I might be asking for too much here, I want to interact with them ALL! I guess what I'm looking for is the Big Picture, I want to take inventory of my virtual life & do some maintenance. Sort, purge but more importantly interact with the right relationships. Thus, the research began. I found two, sort of. Threadsy & Google Wave. Disclaimer: I'm a PC It appears that both require an invitation to get in. Threadsy is much easier to acquire than Google Wave. However, once I began the set up of my profile with my different accounts in Threadsy I had issues with a few of my email addresses {all on the GoDaddy server}. The Twitter & Facebook accounts came through okay as well as my Gmail account. And yet, frustration. I know that I rely on the tools technology offers, like labeling my emails & archiving them appropriately so that when I'm in a tele-meeting I can pull up all correspondence regarding the topic being discussed. Threadsy didn't appear to pull over all my "labels" from Gmail. Aaaarrgggg! I digress. I will sing praises to their efforts though. The right third of the screen is dedicated to your Twitter stream {with your responses "threaded" in} & the remainder of the screen is dedicated to direct communications ~ email, FaceBook messages, DM's from Twitter ~ all "threaded" in via real time. So, if my GoDaddy issues were fixed, who knows this could be what I've been looking for? I still don't know ~ since I can't bring it all over to completely try it out. And subsequently have abandoned the idea until then. Now onto Google Wave. I've got nothing for ya. It appears there aren't any invitations available at the moment. {Even for me, the 2.0 Mental Clutter Expert} It sounds promising though. And since I'm a huge fan of how Google goes about encouraging their employees to be creative {everyone is allowed to be who they are ~ no judgments}, I'll patiently wait for the public release of the Wave. A side note here, I have been using the Google Chrome internet platform the last few days. After installing it, you have the option of adding extensions ~ just like any other browser, but here my "chromed bird" shows a number & I can essentially click on it as a "drop down menu" style to see recent Twitter conversations & interact. I've also added my Gmail checker which again allows that drop down menu style to see just the unread emails ~ downfall, no labels {again}. It seems, as this VERY young industry of social media takes hold, developers will figure out the solutions to the needs/tools we all will begin begging for. In the meantime, keeping track of where you are is going to be much more cumbersome. I'm curious what Mac users have available to them. Yes, I'm among the many drooling over the new iPad {& yes, I'm also among the many who will continue to drool ~ it's just not in the budget this year} --- Stay tuned for upcoming posts on "to schedule or not to schedule your tweets" ... "Time Management for RSS subscriptions" ... "FB Friends or Fan Pages" ... and many more. Thanks} CommentsLeave a Reply |
